If you've ever felt a knot in your stomach reading yet another "AI just changed everything" headline, you're not alone. A friend messaged me recently with the exact same worry: "My greatest fear is that I'll fall behind. Everything's moving so fast." And honestly? Figuring out how to keep up with AI without burning out is something I think about a lot too.

Here's what I've landed on after a couple of years of doing this full time: you don't need to track every single update. You just need to know what's useful for your work. That's a much smaller, much more manageable thing.

I put together a video walking through the six things I actually do to stay current without losing my mind. Have a watch, or read on below for the full rundown.

1. Poke Around in the Tools You Already Use

This is the simplest one, and it's where I'd start. Just use AI regularly, whether that's brainstorming ideas, getting a second opinion on a piece of writing, or working through a problem you're stuck on.

The more time you spend inside these tools, the more you notice things. A new option in a menu. A feature that wasn't there last week. When that happens, just ask the AI about it. "What does this do?" is a perfectly good prompt. I do this all the time and I'm constantly surprised by what I've been missing.

2. Let AI Read Your AI Emails For You

Sign up for a couple of good AI-focused email lists and skim them when they arrive. Or, if you're feeling lazy (no judgement, I do this too), get AI to read them for you.

Copy and paste the email text into ChatGPT and ask it to flag anything relevant to what you do. The beauty of this is it tailors the answer to your actual business, not just what's trending.

If you want to go a step further, you can connect ChatGPT to your Gmail through the plugins menu. Then ask it to check your latest emails from a specific sender and tell you what's worth knowing. It takes a couple of minutes to set up and saves you a lot of scrolling.

3. YouTube Channels That Won't Make You Feel Worse

YouTube is a brilliant source of AI information, but be careful. There's so much hype out there that watching it can make you feel more behind, not less. Ugh.

Two channels I actually rate for business use are Paul J. Lipsky, who stays on top of new features and explains them clearly, and Sabrina Ramonov, who sold an AI company and is now on a mission to teach AI to a million people for free. Both are practical, both are grounded. Neither will leave you feeling like you need to rebuild your entire business by Friday.

4. AI Podcasts for When Your Hands Are Busy

If you commute, go to the gym, or, like me, listen to things when you can't sleep at 2am, podcasts are an easy way to absorb AI news without carving out extra time.

Three I'd recommend:

  • AI Explored – focuses on interviewing business experts about how they're actually using AI
  • Marketing Against The Grain – great for anything at the crossroads of AI and marketing
  • Everyday AI – I dip in and out of this one depending on the topic, which is a perfectly valid way to listen to a podcast

5. Just Ask the AI What's New

This one sounds almost too obvious, but give it a try. Prompt Claude or Gemini with something like:

"What's new in AI from the last seven days that's relevant to me, including anything from the changelogs of the major AI tools?"

Because these tools can search the web, they'll pull together a summary and tailor it to what they know about you and your work. I wish I'd had this back when I was freelancing and trying to keep up with every new design tool release. I used to spend hours reading blog posts and tech sites. Now? One prompt, done.

6. Set Up a Scheduled Task (This One's My Favourite)

This is the one that saves me the most time, and honestly it still feels a bit like magic.

If you've got a Pro or Plus account on ChatGPT, you can set up a scheduled task that runs automatically every week at a time you choose. Tell it what kind of updates you care about, get it to notify you by email and push notification, and the update just lands. No digging required.

It's like having a little research assistant who never forgets and never sends you irrelevant stuff. Well, mostly.

How Do I Stay Up to Date With AI Without Getting Overwhelmed?

Pick two or three methods that fit your routine, not all six. Use the AI tools you already have to surface what matters to you. Sign up for a couple of curated email lists. Set up one automated weekly update. The goal isn't to know everything. It's to know enough to keep moving forward in your own business.

Quick FAQ

Do I need to follow every AI update to stay relevant?
No. Most updates won't affect your day-to-day work. Focus on the tools you already use and let AI filter the rest for you.

What's the fastest way to keep up with AI news?
Set up a scheduled task in ChatGPT to send you a weekly summary of relevant AI updates. It takes five minutes to configure and runs on its own after that.

Are AI podcasts and YouTube channels worth the time?
Yes, if you pick the right ones. Look for channels that focus on practical business use rather than hype. Paul J. Lipsky, Sabrina Ramonov, and the AI Explored podcast are good starting points.

I hope some of these help take the pressure off. Staying up to date with AI really doesn't have to mean drowning in information. A little structure goes a long way.

If you'd like more tips like this, I send out weekly AI emails with practical ideas for using AI in your business, especially if you're over 50 and figuring this out as you go. I'd love to have you along.
